promises

she promised she would
wait for him to realize
where his love lay
whom his heart
yearned for the most
for him to
choose wisely
not let lust cloud
his senses and instead
choose love over
touch,
for love making was surely
better than
sex

he made a promise
of undying love
of patience and
kindness
a life shared
union between man and
woman
love
in its simplest and most
innocent form

they made a promise
to each other that
no matter what was thrown
their way
that they wouldn’t
forget the words that
bound them
as man and wife
belonging to each other
not two beings, but one
and that regardless of
the twists and turns
taken in life
that they would remain faithful
and loyal
forever in love
until death pulled them
apart

oh but they failed to see
that promises were for those
too drunk on love to realize that promises
had an expiry date
they were meant to be broken
and that no matter how
promising the promise was
believing in them only
gave one
heartbreak and disappointment
in return
