Thousand-petalled flowers

Fairies swayed with the soft night breeze
As fireflies exploded against dark skies
Life blossomed and wilted away
A thousand petals, a thousand lives
Sandalwood filled the air
Starting journey of sansara
Towards abyss above
And silence was hidden beneath
Verses of long ago
Dhammachakkapavattana
Sutra, the first
As the night darkened, more joined the crowds
Queens of the night
Donning white instead of color
And there were parrots
Repeating human words
Nidikumbas asleep
Against temple wall
Children ran, legs exposed
Lama sari not covering enough
Babies cried, hungry and cold
But the faithful were quiet
Lost in the night
Saffron robed
Monks and stupa
For that night it was
Enveloped in orange bloom
The clocked ticked on
The sutra ended
The parrots and nidikumbas went back home
And that night
They attained enlightenment
The fireflies and fairies
Reaching sansaric end.
